Whilton Marina celebrates 50 Golden years of buying selling & caring for narrowboats.
2021 sees Whilton Marina celebrate their golden anniversary.
The marina is located on the Grand Union Canal near Daventry in Northamptonshire and was created by David Steele in 1971 who had a background in civil engineering and construction. A six-acre plot was excavated to create one of the first inland marinas on the waterways, the business is still owned and operated by the Steele family with the third generation now actively involved.
Over the years the marina has expanded with the acquisition of their new fantastic motorised lifting hoist in 2018. The new crane which is affectionately known as ‘Hercules’ is capable of lifting 40 tonne narrowboats and widebeams. In addition to the hoist a 9,000sq ft boat workshop was built to enable three 70ft boats to be worked on out of the water and under cover. Whilton Marina is a ‘one stop shop’ on the canal network where you can buy, sell, moor and maintain your narrowboat all in one place without leaving the marina.
Last year has been extremely difficult with having to close the marina to the general public for several months due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However once the sales office re-opened in early June the marina has been extremely busy with a huge demand from prospective buyers. With boat viewings COVID secure, viewings by appointment only and valuations viavarious means including video calls. Now is a fantastic time to sell a narrowboat as demand is very high.
Robert Steele, director of Whilton Marina said “Over the past 50 years we have been the pioneers of the boating industry, we have always adapted to the current climate, worked hard and put in the time and effort to thrive as a company. We have invested heavily in the future of the business to keep us ahead of our competitors and to deliver the best service possible. Luckily we are enjoying a successful year in unprecedented times”
