The Inland Waterways Association 2009 National Festival & Boat Show will be held at Red Hill, near Ratcliffe on Soar, on the Soar Navigation, close to its confluence with the river Trent, and the junctions with the Erewash, and Trent & Mersey canals, just south of Nottingham.
IWA hopes to encourage boaters visiting the Festival to try the Erewash and Chesterfield canals and other lesser frequented waterways of the East Midlands. The Festival also intends to raise the profile and give support to waterway societies in the area, including the Derby, Cromford and Grantham canals all of which are currently under restoration.
IWA’s National Festival brings hundreds of exhibitors and visiting boats as well as thousands of visitors to an area, offering a great day out for families as well as raising the profile of the waterways with local authorities and business communities.
With a full programme of entertainment planned including arena events, a circus, live music and dancing as well as lots of childrens activities. There will be a real ale bar with up to 50 speciality beers and a vide variety of food outlets. A falconry display, with the opportunity to see the birds close up.
Public transport to Festival Site: Brand New - just opened East Midlands Parkway Railway Station is adjacent to site!
IWA will be running a competition for every visitor to the Festival. On arrival Festival goers will receive a "Spot the Answer" sheet and will need to keep their eyes open for the answers to clues about the IWA as they go around the site. Top prize for the winner will be a one week holiday on a 2/4 berth barge on the beautiful waterways of Ireland, courtesy of Riversdale Barge Holidays at Ballinamore.
